...WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAIN COMING TO SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA...

UNUSUALLY WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAIN WILL MOVE INTO PORTIONS OF
SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA ON THURSDAY...IMPACTING DRIVING
CONDITIONS...OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES...AND RESULTING IN RISES ON
RIVERS AND STREAMS. NO SIGNIFICANT FLOODING IS EXPECTED AT THIS
TIME.

CONFIDENCE IS HIGH THAT THE COPPER RIVER BASIN AND MAT-SU VALLEYS
WILL SEE THE HIGHEST RAINFALL TOTALS...WITH THE MATANUSKA
RIVER LIKELY SEEING THE HIGHEST WATER LEVELS OF THE SUMMER SO FAR.
OTHER RIVERS NORTH OF ANCHORAGE WILL ALSO SEE SIGNIFICANT WATER
LEVEL INCREASES. LESSER BUT STILL NOTEWORTHY RAINFALL TOTALS AND
ASSOCIATED RIVER RISES WILL OCCUR AROUND THE ANCHORAGE AREA AND
THE NORTHERN KENAI PENINSULA. ANCHORAGE AREA DRIVERS SHOULD BE
PREPARED FOR LOCALIZED PONDING OF WATER ON ROADWAYS AND BIKE
PATHS.
.KENAI LAKE AND KENAI RIVER...

WATER LEVELS ON KENAI LAKE AND THE UPPER KENAI RIVER REMAIN HIGH.
NO WIDESPREAD FLOODING IS EXPECTED AT THIS TIME...HOWEVER WATER
WILL BE HIGH THROUGH THE FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND. IN THE LAST 24
HOURS THE UPPER RIVER HAS CRESTED...WITH THE COOPER LANDING RIVER
GAUGE HAVING DROPPED ABOUT 2 INCHES SINCE YESTERDAY. THE UPCOMING
RAINFALL WILL LIKELY REVERSE THIS TREND AND RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL
RISE IN THE RIVER. THERE IS LIKELY STILL SOME WATER ACROSS THE
ACCESS ROAD TO PRIMROSE CAMPGROUND...LOCATED AT THE SOUTH END OF
KENAI LAKE. RECENT REPORTS FROM THE KENAI KEYS AREA INDICATE THE
RIVER IS BANKFULL IN THIS AREA WITH PONDING OF WATER IN LOW LYING
AREAS ADJACENT TO THE RIVER.

MEANWHILE...A RECENT OVERFLIGHT OF THE SKILAK GLACIER-DAMMED LAKE
IN THE KENAI MOUNTAINS HAS CONFIRMED THAT THE LAKE LEVEL REMAINS
HIGH AND HAS NOT RELEASED. THE NWS HAS NO INDICATION THAT A
RELEASE IS IMMINENT...BUT WILL CONTINUE TO CLOSELY MONITOR THIS
SITUATION AND WILL UPDATE THIS STATEMENT AS NECESSARY.

THOSE WITH INTERESTS ON OR ALONG THE KENAI RIVER AND NEAR THE
PRIMROSE CAMPGROUND SHOULD MONITOR THIS SITUATION CLOSELY AND
PREPARE NOW FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF CONTINUED RISING WATER LEVELS.
